What We Do
We promote lifelong learning and education, support and scholarships, community engagement and advocacy, and other activities to enhance the lives and status of women and girls in our local communities, as well as across BC, Canada and abroad. Check our upcoming events!
Meeting, gatherings & outings
We have monthly general meetings with guest presentations from community groups and sometimes field trips. Some members meet up for hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and environmental clean-up days. Our Book Club meets monthly. Other interest groups pre-COVID included an Out-to-Lunch Club, Bridge Group, Anything-But-Bridge Group, and a Hot Chicks (hot springs) Group!
Public Events
For over 45 years, CFUW Nelson & District has co-hosted a Nelson Municipal All Candidates Forum with Nelson & District Teachers Association. Our latest one was held on October 11, 2022.
We hosted our 3rd Stories Inspire Passion: SIP Talks scholarship fundraiser on September 24, 2022 highlighting dynamic Kootenay women leaders.
Advocacy & Community Engagement
Many of our club members advocate locally, as well as provincially, nationally, and internationally to improve the lives of women and girls. As members of CFUW National and Graduate Women International (GWI), our club also engages in online policy advocacy and education activities on issues impacting the lives and status of women and girls. In 2022, our Nelson & District club proposed a national CFUW policy resolution for Strengthening Employment Equity.
Scholarships & Support
Our mission includes raising funds for scholarships and bursaries that we award annually to local women and youth in our community. Our Elizabeth Wallach Scholarship goes to a Grade 12 woman graduating from LV Rogers Secondary School. At Selkirk College, we award a Bursary as well as a Scholarship for a 2nd year student. Nationally, CFUW's Charitable Trust and its local clubs award close to $1 million annually to women to help them pursue post-secondary studies!
